Big FAQ Update

I’ve done some major changes to the FAQ to better reflect how the ShadowHime Network is structured. With the introduction of two particular bots, E-D|Flandre and E-D|Remilia, two bots with anime on them from Exiled-Destiny, I’ve went ahead and allowed, to some extent, XDCC bots on the network. Bots and fservers do still have to get some approval from a staff member, but we’re more laxed about it now than what I originally had in the FAQ. I’ll give the relevant block that was changed in a big way.

And.. she’s back up!

Ok, it did take a little while to get there, but after GnuTLS was updated, I was finally able to get the SSL to work like its suppose to. So, with that, she’s back online. Its a little late in me posting, but actually, I wanted to make sure things were going to work fine, and I’m glad they are now.

Services are also back, and … that’s about it for now.

LoliFox Temporarily Down

I’ve tried every possible thing I can think of to get that server back online. For the life of me, nothing I did worked. SSL port is borked bad after I did an upgrade on the server for the software. I don’t know what happened, but something broke it and all my configs are fine. Luna is still operating normally, so anyone is still able to use or to connect to the functioning server.

With that, the services are also out of whack. I tried to get them to remotely connect, but every possible setting does not want to work and I’m not about to reconfigure everything again. I might move the services onto Luna maybe, but I’m still debating on that. It may be for the better.. Though I am grateful to the person who did generously provide the server for LoliFox, but its been causing me nothing but trouble for some unknown reasons. Hence the initial software upgrade which has gone completely awry with all sorts of issues. I let the person know who handles the main bit of the server itself because its beyond my control now.

I will keep updated as necessary when I have more info to post.

Where’s Ganymede then?

Short answer: I have no clue.

Long answer: I’ve been debating about putting it back into the mix, but I don’t particularly like home connections used for a live server. Maybe for development perhaps, but not as a live thing without some real good power surge protection like a heavy duty UPS and hot-swappable bays and easy-to-change parts.

Is it coming back? Honestly, I don’t know. There’s been a few things going on that I won’t get into right now, but whether or not it does come back depends on a few things. 1. Servers don’t pay for themselves, so I have a job. On top of that, I also have a life too, so working on a home-based server hasn’t been a high priority for me.

Now where’s that cron I need for Luna and LoliFox… One of these days I’ll get off my lazy butt and put those in. Just wish I kept my original cron information, but dumbass me didn’t do that.

Another update for Luna!

Good grief, been a while since I last posted, huh?

Ok, straight to the point. I bought a server a couple months ago for another purpose, but because it is a quad core server, there’s a lot more I can do with it than just host IRC bots for transferring files and such. So, I decided to open up Luna on that server and have it go for a test run for a while. Working pretty well to my amazement.

What does that mean for ShadowHime? WE HAVE A HUB FINALLY! Yep, I’m paying out-of-pocket for that server, so we now have two actual servers. One for a hub, another as a leaf. Will it get in the round-robin? No. Why? Because the hub acts as a gateway for other servers to connect to, and it makes it much easier for splits to reconnect the servers back so I don’t have to do much. The last thing I need to do is move the services over there, but that shouldn’t be terribly difficult, just been busy the past while.

Permanent Loss of Luna

Since it keeps going down every other day as of late, causing the entire network to split, I’m not going to bother with that datacenter anymore. There’s just no point. I’ve got two options lined up right now, Kalshion may take on one, while I do the other. That way, although it is quite a bit for such a small network, 3 dedicated servers in datacenters is ideal for some redundancy in case one suffers a total outage that could happen.

If anyone has noticed, yes, it was linked, but I never actually added back into the round robin DNS. I was going through a test run the past couple weeks and it ran fine for a little while until recently. When Luna kicked off, it split the entire network up, and we don’t like that. There’s a chance Luna will come back later in the year under a different datacenter. In which case, I have one more service lined up after that for another special moniker of an MOTD (like LoliFox because I’m special that way, though if you contact me when we need servers, we might be able to work something out) server for in the future.

Ganymede so far has been a rather stable server currently, ran by Soultaker at his home. We’ve got another leaf possibly coming up soon that we’ll probably test run in the mean time, but I’ll withhold most of that information for now. Though, with plans of possibility of 3 real servers, I may decide to use his services for something else, depending on what is needed. Currently I’m not sure, something I’ll think about it because I don’t want to spread the users (of what little we have) across too many different servers. That would fragment it quite a bit… Idea is that Luna will be hub, so I’ll probably keep its IP out of the round robin DNS (the in case some may have forgotten), with any leaf servers connected. That way, it’ll be somewhat easier to manage and that the leaf’s won’t fragment too much of the network.. that is unless the hub goes offline, which would royally suck.

That’s all I got for news right now. I’ll post more later on when I have a bit of time. Most of these talks have been behind closed doors (though they not very often mind you), because nothing has been finalized, and I hate giving out info that isn’t final yet. Just not how I like to do things personally speaking.
