Where’s Ganymede then?

Short answer: I have no clue.

Long answer: I’ve been debating about putting it back into the mix, but I don’t particularly like home connections used for a live server. Maybe for development perhaps, but not as a live thing without some real good power surge protection like a heavy duty UPS and hot-swappable bays and easy-to-change parts.

Is it coming back? Honestly, I don’t know. There’s been a few things going on that I won’t get into right now, but whether or not it does come back depends on a few things. 1. Servers don’t pay for themselves, so I have a job. On top of that, I also have a life too, so working on a home-based server hasn’t been a high priority for me.

Now where’s that cron I need for Luna and LoliFox… One of these days I’ll get off my lazy butt and put those in. Just wish I kept my original cron information, but dumbass me didn’t do that.

Another update for Luna!

Good grief, been a while since I last posted, huh?

Ok, straight to the point. I bought a server a couple months ago for another purpose, but because it is a quad core server, there’s a lot more I can do with it than just host IRC bots for transferring files and such. So, I decided to open up Luna on that server and have it go for a test run for a while. Working pretty well to my amazement.

What does that mean for ShadowHime? WE HAVE A HUB FINALLY! Yep, I’m paying out-of-pocket for that server, so we now have two actual servers. One for a hub, another as a leaf. Will it get in the round-robin? No. Why? Because the hub acts as a gateway for other servers to connect to, and it makes it much easier for splits to reconnect the servers back so I don’t have to do much. The last thing I need to do is move the services over there, but that shouldn’t be terribly difficult, just been busy the past while.

Permanent Loss of Luna

Since it keeps going down every other day as of late, causing the entire network to split, I’m not going to bother with that datacenter anymore. There’s just no point. I’ve got two options lined up right now, Kalshion may take on one, while I do the other. That way, although it is quite a bit for such a small network, 3 dedicated servers in datacenters is ideal for some redundancy in case one suffers a total outage that could happen.

If anyone has noticed, yes, it was linked, but I never actually added back into the round robin DNS. I was going through a test run the past couple weeks and it ran fine for a little while until recently. When Luna kicked off, it split the entire network up, and we don’t like that. There’s a chance Luna will come back later in the year under a different datacenter. In which case, I have one more service lined up after that for another special moniker of an MOTD (like LoliFox because I’m special that way, though if you contact me when we need servers, we might be able to work something out) server for in the future.

Ganymede so far has been a rather stable server currently, ran by Soultaker at his home. We’ve got another leaf possibly coming up soon that we’ll probably test run in the mean time, but I’ll withhold most of that information for now. Though, with plans of possibility of 3 real servers, I may decide to use his services for something else, depending on what is needed. Currently I’m not sure, something I’ll think about it because I don’t want to spread the users (of what little we have) across too many different servers. That would fragment it quite a bit… Idea is that Luna will be hub, so I’ll probably keep its IP out of the round robin DNS (the irc.shadowhime.net in case some may have forgotten), with any leaf servers connected. That way, it’ll be somewhat easier to manage and that the leaf’s won’t fragment too much of the network.. that is unless the hub goes offline, which would royally suck.

That’s all I got for news right now. I’ll post more later on when I have a bit of time. Most of these talks have been behind closed doors (though they not very often mind you), because nothing has been finalized, and I hate giving out info that isn’t final yet. Just not how I like to do things personally speaking.

What’s this? StatServ is back?!

In all seriousness, I did a bit of thinking and decided to bring it back and run it on one of the servers. Its running a lot better since MySQL will be local on that box. Problem: phpDenora can’t remote to the database at the moment, and I haven’t been able to get in touch with the person about that. Believe the reason is college and stuff, so it may be a few days before that’s back.

Keep an eye out for updates and I’ll post something on Twitter when I got it going finally. I already made the changes, so its just a matter of waiting now.

Offered Server

Got a server offer maybe, so at the moment its a matter of working out the smaller details about how things will be done. It will not be Luna, but under a different name, as I’m waiting for a VPS or Dedicated box to put Luna on as a hub. I’ve got some ideas perhaps on that, but its an investment I’ll have to think about.

Luna is Going Away

The constant DDoS’ing of the main datacenter and I doubt they’re going to get better DDoS mitigation when it continues to take ’em offline, I’m no longer going to do business with them. Their support is good, but their servers are not. Thus, we will be short one server for now with LoliFox being a temporary hub until I can look into another service. I’m thinking of talking to the people who run the actual servers that LoliFox is on and see about setting one up there on another datacenter, if possible, and go from there. That’s the idea anyway.

With that being said, DNS records have been updated, so please allow for 48 hours for things to settle down and ISP’s to flush their DNS cache. (the good ISP’s, most are stupid these days…) irc.shadowhime.net should take you to either Ganymede or LoliFox, and I’m going to terminate the process on Luna and we’ll go from there. I can’t use my server box here because my internet is unstable as hell, which won’t make it ideal to host anything much. Sucks with the crap I have to deal with, but such is my ISP…
